Lydia, Emily, and Cassie have been best friends for practically their entire lives. When their English teacher requires them to become pen pals with students from a rival school, Brookfield High (a school full of thugs, according to the girls), mayhem ensues. Each of the girls ends up with a boy for a pen pal. At first, Emily’s pen pal thinks that she’s a pampered bonbon-eating, mall-obsessed rich kid who has issues with vocabulary; Lydia’s pen pal is thrown by her sense of humor (writing “I am a fish” in her first letter probably didn’t help); and Cassie’s pen pal is either a psychopath or he doesn’t, in fact, exist. As their pen pal relationships deepen and grow, readers enjoy getting to know all of the characters better as they tumble in and out of adventures, false alarms, spy missions, and an actual legal battle. I did not want this book to end!
Highly recommended for grades 7-12.
