The main characters are all 18 or 19 years old, and the wartime experiences that take place are realistically violent. This book is told almost entirely from Morris’ perspective, but there are some letters from Rudi and Beck and an interaction with Ivan that serve to illuminate their situations as well. I am hoping that future books in this series are narrated by the other friends in order to flesh out all of their experiences. This is a solid start to this series, and the realistic, gritty action will keep readers coming back for more.
