I enjoyed this novel, but I don’t think that many teens would make it through the first few chapters. Ostensibly, it’s about a 7th grader named Listen and her attempts to fit in, but actually it’s about all of the adults in her life and their misguided relationships. There are a lot of extramarital affairs happening in this book, which bugs me in and of itself, but teens reading this book could not care less about the story lines of the adult relationships. For most of the book, readers are wondering about how all of the story lines will tie together and what, exactly, the crazy Zing family secret is, but by the end of the novel, everything is resolved, and while not all is forgiven, much is. The best part is that Listen will be entering a new school where she already has a few friends and where she will fit in better.
Recommended for grades 10-12, college & adult.
