Recently, I read a fabulous book, Shooting the Moon, by Frances O’Roark Dowell. Its main character, Jamie Dexter, and her brother T.J., have grown up hearing, “the Army is the right way!” thanks to their father, the Colonel. However, when T.J. enlists and is sent to Vietnam, things change. T.J. promises to send letters, but T.J.’s first letter to Jamie isn’t a letter at all! It’s a roll of film. When Jamie develops the picture, she discovers another side of the war. Soon, the Colonel’s words have lost their impact.
This book is complicated and unpredictable….just like war! I really liked it and would recommend it for students in grades 5-9.
