I was really pulling for Sonia, in spite of some of the poor decisions that she made throughout the novel. Deciding not to tell anyone about her uncle’s lecherous advances: not good. Deciding to push away the one decent boy in her life: not good. Ultimately, however, I was happy with the ending and the hope that she represented for her younger siblings. Anyone taking Spanish classes will enjoy the amount of Spanish text (although it’s easy to figure out what they’re saying from the context of the conversations) and will find the portrayal of Mexican culture fascinating.
