I could not relate to Vanessa in the least, but I appreciated the journey of self-discovery that she was on. Every high school student tries on different personas at one time or another, and Vanessa’s “I’m an artist, look at me” persona, while annoying, was essential to her growth. From the outset, Vanessa had a lot of maturing to do, and in spite of the people whom she hurt along the way, nothing that she did was irreversible or unforgivable. Ultimately, Vanessa's realization that she can make her mark on the world without having to resort to shock tactics absolves her of previous poor choices.
