This really is a terrific book for reluctant readers! The text is large with very wide margins to accommodate Derek’s vocabulary doodles, and the font is playful yet easy to read. Derek’s escapades are hilarious (avocado hand grenades; dog riding rhesus monkeys; “Mission Impossible” style jewel thefts in the basement of his former nemesis), and his tone is authentic. The visualization technique that Derek learns from Margot at Learning Camp is simply brilliant—especially for a movie aficionado such as himself—and the whole idea of drawing vocabulary words in the margins is a technique that more teachers should use. I highly recommend this book for all readers, but especially for boys, and for fans of the Wimpy Kid series, and for (you guessed it) reluctant readers.
Highly recommended for grades 5-8.
