In theory, the pictures add an extra dimension to the Shakespearean text since the Bard’s plays were never intended to be read, but seen. However, for my taste, condensing the story into 48 pages doesn’t do it justice. A person could read this graphic novel and get the main idea of the story, but that’s about it.
For students who are into graphic novels but wouldn’t normally read Shakespeare, I suppose reading this is better than not reading Shakespeare, but honestly, I do NOT recommend this in place of reading the original play. Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most well known works, and it seems tragic to me that someone could read this and think they know the complexities of the story.
