This book has all of the makings of a sweet romance, but the character of Marijke was not very likable. She was clingy and whiny and very self-centered. Her huge revelation at the end of the book was predictable but not executed well, so it fell flat and left me cringing. Tommy wasn't likable, either, and his transformation at the end of the book felt forced and unauthentic. Lily, on the other hand, was likable (I loved her sarcastic humor), but I wanted more from both her and Joe. I didn't feel as though they were fleshed out enough, so the ending seemed unrealistic and rushed. I enjoyed all of the movie references, but I wondered if they would mostly be lost on today's teens. Say Anything? Pretty in Pink? How many of today's teens have seen those classics? Overall, it was a lighthearted read with a "happily ever after," but if you're looking for depth, you might want to skip this one.
