I had not read the first book, Deliver Us From Normal, prior to reading this sequel. You certainly do not need to have read it in order to understand or follow the plot, but it might help you stick with the book if you already have a vested interest in the characters. I just couldn’t make myself like any of them. Charles is a self-centered teen falling in “love” with a much older woman; the parents are hippie throwbacks, and the rest of the kids have quirks and flaws that are just not very believable. It was a struggle to finish this book.
Lukewarm recommendation for grades 6-8.
