Readers who have not read the first book in the Seven Realms series, The Demon King, will definitely want to set this book aside until they have read the first. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book in spite of not having read The Demon King. The characters are complex and multi-faceted. Raisa is spunky and strong, although clearly torn between duty and following her heart. Han is everything that you’d want in a romantic hero, although he, too, walks a fine line between the will of others and that of his own. Although the story takes place in the fantasy world of the Seven Realms where wizardry and magic play a central role, the plot might be appealing to non-fantasy readers since the characters are all human and there is a strong emphasis upon the relationships—romantic and otherwise—between them. Readers will definitely be clamoring for the next book in this series.
