The author knows what she’s talking about; Kristina is based on her daughter. There is nothing glamorous about drug use in this novel told in poetic free verse. In fact, Kristina is date-raped and ends up pregnant, which forces her to tone down--although not completely give up--her drug use. There is no fairy tale ending to this story. Kristina will always be an addict. She will always be lured away from the straight and narrow path by the seductive use of crank. No matter how much Kristina would like to be a responsible parent to her new baby, Bree’s love of the monster will always win out. Powerful, unsettling, and very realistic.
