I’m not usually a fan of mysteries, but I loved The Da Vinci Code mostly because of its mind-blowing “what if” and “oh my gosh” moments. Chasing Vermeer had a similar feel to it. From Petra’s unexplainable dreams to Calder’s use of his pentominoes, I was drawn into the story in a way that I am not typically drawn into mysteries.
The book is rather long for 5th and 6th graders, but since the characters are in the 6th grade, I’m not sure who the intended audience is. I actually listened to it in my car with my 7 year old daughter, but a lot of the nuances of the plot went completely over her head. I definitely think it’s more for 7th and 8th grade reading abilities, so I’m highly recommending it for grades 5-8.
