The author, Sharon Draper, has a daughter with cerebral palsy, and so she knows exactly what she’s writing about. This book broke my heart into a million little pieces, but Melody’s strength and perseverance triumphed over and over again. The ending is very realistic--not your traditional happily-ever-after conclusion--but that just made me love the story all the more. Melody’s life will never be like a fairy tale, but she will forge her way through, breaking down barriers, annihilating misperceptions, and educating all of us a little along the way.
Highly recommended for gr. 4-8.
